Cadigal Green

TCL won an international design competition to design a new public domain for the University of Sydney’s Darlington campus, now named Cadigal Green. Cadigal Green reflects upon the history of the site, which was once used as a colonial market garden and Indigenous hunting ground. This vision is integrated into the design through a sand-blasted paving pattern, which results is a landscape design that responds both to its cultural and physical history.

The scheme, which was titled “Fertile Ground,” created a new pedestrian corridor from the Shepherd Street entry through the Darlington campus to connect to the new Library and the Camperdown campus. The creation of a series of water harvesting wetlands is integrated into the existing campus landscape with new underground storage tanks which irrigate the planting throughout the campus. Custom designed furniture by TCL offers students and staff opportunities to engage and relax within the grounds.

Kangaroo paw is the common name for a number of species, in two genera of the family Haemodoraceae, that are endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. These rhizomatous perennial plants are noted for their unique bird-attracting flowers. The tubular flowers are coated with dense hairs and open at the apex with six claw-like structures, and it is from this paw-like formation that the common name "kangaroo paw" is derived.

If grown in a climate with frost, they must be kept in containers and moved indoors to survive the cold weather.

Look up! This Smart Bench is charged by solar panels and the lights are powered by Gelion’s transformative batteries
Gelion’s transformation battery technology has been implemented within its place of birth, the University of Sydney. Gelion’s batteries are powering the brand new smart solar benches at three sites within the University. These benches harness renewable energy from the sun to provide students with a safe and usable space to meet and collaborate on campus to the evening.
Gelion Tehcnologies is a spin-off from the University’s Science Department, the brain child of Professor Thomas Maschmeyer.
As one of the first installations of Gelion’s batteries, these benches are a commitment from the University of Sydney to support innovation out of its own research, as well as drive towards a more sustainable future.
